Landscape material estimator

Mulch Calculator

Estimate mulch, compost, soil, or bark coverage from bed length, width, depth, waste allowance, bag size, and bulk price. Use it for garden beds, tree rings, playground chips, and landscape top-dressing.

Mulch depth is an order estimate

Confirm plant crown clearance, drainage, edging height, supplier bag volume, and whether the material settles heavily. Do not pile mulch against trunks or siding.

Mulch Calculator formula

Base volume ft³ = length ft × width ft × (depth in ÷ 12)

Order volume = base volume × (1 + waste %)

Bulk cubic yards = order volume ft³ ÷ 27

Bags to buy = ceil(order volume ft³ ÷ bag size ft³)

Bulk material cost = bulk cubic yards × price per yd³

Example

A 20 ft by 8 ft bed at 3 in deep is 40 ft³. Add 10% settling allowance: 44 ft³, or 1.6 yd³. With 2 ft³ bags, buy 22 bags.

Mulch Calculator FAQ

How do you calculate mulch bags?+

Multiply bed length by width by depth, convert depth from inches to feet, add settling or waste allowance, then divide by the bag volume. Round up to full bags.

How deep should mulch be?+

A common refresh layer is 1-2 inches, while a new bed often uses about 3 inches. Too much mulch can hold moisture against plants or structures.

Can this calculate soil or compost?+

Yes. Use the same length, width, depth, and bag-size math for topsoil, compost, bark, playground chips, and similar loose landscape materials.

Should I order bulk yards or bags?+

Small beds are often easier by bag. Larger areas are usually cheaper in bulk yards, but confirm delivery minimums and spreading access.
