Gable end area and material takeoff

Gable Area Calculator

Estimate triangular gable end area for siding, sheathing, or paint. Use a measured gable height or calculate height from roof pitch, then add waste and round material counts.

Gable area formula

Measured mode: gable area = base × height ÷ 2 × gable count

Pitch mode: height = base ÷ 2 × rise ÷ run

Net area = max(gable area - openings, 0)

Order area = net area × (1 + waste %)

Sheets = ceil(order area ÷ sheet coverage)

Example

Two 24 ft wide gable ends with 6 ft height have 144 sq ft of raw triangle area. Subtract 20 sq ft of vents and add 10% waste, then order about 136 sq ft, or 5 sheets at 32 sq ft each.

Gable area calculator FAQ

How do I calculate gable area?+

For a simple triangular gable, multiply the gable base by the gable height, then divide by two. If there are two matching gable ends, multiply that triangle area by two. Subtract vents, windows, or doors if they will not receive siding or sheathing.

Can I use roof pitch instead of measuring gable height?+

Yes. For an equal-slope gable, gable height equals half the gable base multiplied by rise divided by run. A 24 ft base with a 6/12 pitch has a 6 ft gable height because 12 ft half-span times 6 divided by 12 equals 6 ft.

How much waste should I add for a gable end?+

Use about 10% for simple siding or sheathing cuts. Use 15% to 20% for steep gables, small pieces, patterned siding, trim-heavy ends, or jobs where matching courses matters.

Is this a structural roof calculator?+

No. This estimates surface area and material counts for gable ends. Structural loads, framing, bracing, wind exposure, fire rules, permits, and manufacturer requirements still need local review.
