Stair rail pitch and cut angle

Stair Handrail Angle Calculator

Find the stair railing angle, pitch ratio, and diagonal rail length from total rise and run, or from riser count and tread depth.

Units
Stair rail angle
Rail length
Pitch ratio
Slope length

Railing layout is not code approval

Handrail height, graspability, returns, guard height, openings, bracket spacing, landings, and local rules vary. Confirm the installed rail against your jurisdiction and rail-system instructions.

Handrail angle formula

Angle = arctan(total rise ÷ total run)

Diagonal slope length = √(rise² + run²)

Rail cut length = diagonal slope length + rail extension

Pitch ratio = rise ÷ run

Example

A stair with 84 in total rise and 132 in total run has a rail angle of 32.5 degrees and a diagonal line of 156.6 in. Add 24 in of returns or extensions and cut about 180.6 in of rail.

Stair handrail angle FAQ

How do I calculate a stair handrail angle?+

Use angle = arctan(total rise divided by total run). The same angle is the stair pitch, stringer angle, and rail angle for a straight flight when rise and run are measured on the same line.

What angle is a normal stair railing?+

Many comfortable stairs land around 30 to 37 degrees. A 7 inch rise with an 11 inch tread is about 32.5 degrees. Code rules vary, so use the calculator as a layout helper, not approval.

How do I calculate rail length on stairs?+

Rail length between two plumb marks is the diagonal distance: square root of rise squared plus run squared. Add extra overhang or return length after that if your code or design requires it.

Is handrail angle the same as stair pitch?+

For a straight stair run, yes. The handrail follows the same slope as the stair line unless brackets, landings, goosenecks, or returns change the installation.
