Post hole concrete formula

Hole volume ft³ = π × (diameter in ÷ 24)² × (depth in ÷ 12)

Square post volume ft³ = (post width in ÷ 12)² × (depth in ÷ 12)

Net per hole = max(hole volume − buried post volume, 0)

Concrete bags = ceil(net volume × holes × (1 + waste %) ÷ bag yield)

Example

Eight 12 in diameter holes at 30 in deep with 4×4 posts, 10% waste, and 60 lb bags at 0.45 ft³ yield need about 33 bags total, or roughly 4.1 bags per hole.

When to use this calculator

  • Fence posts, deck posts, mailbox posts, pergola posts, sign posts, and simple round footing checks.
  • Bagged concrete ordering when a supplier gives yield per 80 lb, 60 lb, 40 lb, 25 kg, or 20 kg bag.
  • Quick field checks before switching to the full concrete calculator for slabs, pads, tubes, and columns.

Post hole concrete calculator FAQ

How do I calculate concrete for post holes?+

Calculate one post hole as a cylinder: π × radius² × depth. Multiply by the number of holes, subtract any buried post volume if you want a tighter estimate, add waste, then convert the total volume into bags.

How many bags of concrete do I need for a fence post?+

It depends on hole diameter, hole depth, post size, and bag yield. A common 12 inch diameter by 30 inch deep hole is about 1.96 ft³ before subtracting the post. With a 4×4 post and 10% waste, it is roughly four 60 lb bags per hole when using 0.45 ft³ bags.

Should I subtract the post volume?+

Yes if the post takes up meaningful space in the hole and you want a closer bag estimate. Leaving subtraction off is more conservative and may be useful when holes are irregular or over-dug.

Does this tell me how deep posts must be?+

No. This estimates concrete quantity only. Post depth, frost line, wind exposure, guardrail loads, utilities, drainage, and local code must be checked before digging or setting posts.
