Floor framing layout estimator
Floor Joist Calculator
Estimate floor joist count, on-center layout, rim boards, blocking rows, total framing length, and rough material cost from room size and joist spacing. Use it for takeoffs before checking spans and local code.
Joist count is not a span design
This calculator counts layout material only. Joist size, species, grade, span tables, loads, deflection, bearing, blocking rules, hangers, fire blocking, and local code must be verified before building.

Floor joist formula
Joist rows = floor width ÷ on-center spacing + 1
Joists to buy = joist rows × (1 + waste %)
Blocking pieces = blocking rows × spaces between joists
Linear footage = joist rows × joist span + rim boards + blocking length
Example
A 12 ft wide by 16 ft span floor at 16 in on-center spacing, two rim boards, one blocking row, and 10% waste needs about 11 joists, 9 blocking pieces, and 197.3 linear ft of framing.
Floor Joist Calculator FAQ
Does this floor joist calculator choose joist size?+
No. It counts joists and blocking for a layout. Use span tables, product data, an engineer, or your local code authority to choose joist size, species, grade, and allowable span.
How many joists do I need at 16 inches on center?+
Divide the floor width in inches by 16, round up, then add one joist for the starting edge. VibeCalc adds your waste percentage to the buy count.
Should I add blocking rows?+
Add blocking when the code, joist depth, subfloor layout, bracing plan, or inspector requires it. This calculator multiplies each blocking row by the spaces between joists.
