Spacing is layout math, not structural design

This calculator places repeated members along a measured run. It does not approve spans, loads, code-required spacing, fastener schedules, guardrail openings, or engineering details. Verify the required spacing for the specific job before building.

On-center spacing formula

Run inches = run length × 12

Layout marks = ceiling((run length - start offset) ÷ on-center spacing) + 1

Members to buy = layout marks × (1 + waste %)

Adjusted spacing = remaining run ÷ spaces between marks

Example

A 12 ft run at 16 in on-center with no offset and 10% waste has 10 layout marks and needs about 11 members. If the run is not exact, use the adjusted spacing result to see the last-bay layout.

On-Center Spacing Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate 16 inches on center?+

Convert the run to inches, divide by 16, round up, then add one layout mark for the starting edge. VibeCalc also adds your waste percentage to the buy count.

Can I use this for studs, joists, rafters, pickets, or blocking?+

Yes, when the job is repeated layout marks along a straight run. Use the specific calculator pages when you also need plates, rim boards, railing posts, fasteners, or material-cost details.

Does this choose the correct spacing for code?+

No. It calculates the layout once you choose a spacing. Span tables, rail opening limits, local code, product data, and engineering requirements decide whether 12, 16, 19.2, 24 inches, 400 mm, or another spacing is allowed.
