Carpet formula

Room area = length × width × rooms

Order area = room area × (1 + waste %)

Square yards = order area ÷ 9

Linear roll length = order area ÷ roll width

Sample takeoff

A 12 ft by 15 ft room with 12 ft roll width and 12% waste needs about 23 square yards of carpet and 16.8 linear feet, or 5.6 linear yards, of roll length.

Carpet Calculator FAQ

How does this carpet calculator work?+

It multiplies measured job dimensions by the coverage, spacing, or package yield you enter, adds waste, then rounds the buy quantity up. Have the installer confirm roll width, seam direction, pattern match, stairs, and transitions before ordering.

Should I use the default waste value?+

Use the default for a quick planning estimate, then raise it for cuts, odd layouts, breakage, bad access, or product-specific loss.

Is this a bid or code approval?+

No. It is a material planning calculator. Verify product data, local code, structural requirements, electrical requirements, and supplier packaging before ordering or building.
