Driveway pitch and grade check

Driveway Slope Calculator

Convert driveway rise and run into grade percent, slope angle, and sloped surface length before planning concrete, gravel, asphalt, or drainage work.

Drainage and access note

This calculator reports geometry only. Driveway grades must still satisfy local access rules, drainage, curb transitions, traction, snow/ice conditions, and any permit requirements.

Driveway slope formula

Grade percent = rise ÷ horizontal run × 100

Pitch angle = atan(rise ÷ run)

Slope length = sqrt(run² + rise²)

Surface area = slope length × driveway width × (1 + waste %)

Sample takeoff

A driveway that rises 2 ft over a 30 ft horizontal run has a 6.7% grade, a 3.8° angle, and about 30.1 ft of sloped surface length.

Driveway Slope Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate driveway slope?+

Divide total rise by horizontal run and multiply by 100 for grade percent. Use atan(rise/run) for the angle in degrees.

Is pitch the same as grade?+

They describe the same slope in different units. Grade is a percent; pitch angle is degrees; roof-style pitch ratios are usually not the clearest format for driveways.

Can this tell me the maximum driveway slope allowed?+

No. Maximum slope depends on local rules, garage transitions, sidewalk/curb geometry, drainage, vehicle clearance, and climate.
