Picket spacing is layout math

This calculator places pickets evenly inside a measured opening. It does not approve guardrail code, fence height, post spacing, wind loads, fasteners, or local rules. For guardrails, verify the required maximum opening before building.

Picket spacing formula

Pickets per section = ceiling((opening - max gap) ÷ (picket width + max gap))

Equal gap = (opening - pickets × picket width) ÷ (pickets + 1)

Total pickets = pickets per section × sections × (1 + waste %)

Sample takeoff

A 96 in opening with 1.5 in pickets and a 4 in max gap needs 17 pickets per section, leaving about 3.53 in equal gaps. Ten sections with 8% waste need about 184 pickets.

Picket Spacing Calculator FAQ

Is picket spacing different from baluster spacing?+

The math is similar, but the intent is different. Picket spacing usually means fence or rail pickets inside repeated sections; baluster spacing often focuses on stair or deck guard code.

How do I keep every gap under 4 inches?+

Enter 4 inches as the maximum gap. VibeCalc rounds the picket count up, then shows the equal gap that stays at or below that limit.

Does this account for posts?+

No. Measure the clear opening between posts or rails, then enter that opening length. Use the fence material or deck railing post calculator for post layout.
