Gable roof area and framing estimator
Gable Roof Calculator
Estimate gable roof plane area, roof squares, ridge length, common rafter count, and rough material cost from building length, span, pitch, and rafter spacing.
Gable roof takeoff is not a structural design
This calculator estimates area and material counts for a simple symmetrical gable roof. Verify actual overhangs, hips/valleys, dormers, truss layouts, ventilation, loads, sheathing, fasteners, and local code before ordering or building.

Gable roof formula
Half span run = building span ÷ 2 + eave overhang
Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)
Roof area = building length × 2 × half span run × pitch multiplier
Rafter rows = building length ÷ on-center spacing + 1
Sample takeoff
A 40 ft long by 24 ft span gable roof at 6/12 pitch with 1 ft overhang, 16 in rafter spacing, and 10% waste is about 1,279 ft², or 12.8 roof squares, and needs about 69 rafters.
Gable Roof Calculator FAQ
How does this gable roof calculator work?+
It multiplies measured job dimensions by the coverage, spacing, or package yield you enter, adds waste, then rounds the buy quantity up. This assumes a simple symmetrical gable roof with two equal roof planes.
Should I use the default waste value?+
Use the default for a quick planning estimate, then raise it for cuts, odd layouts, breakage, bad access, or product-specific loss.
Is this a bid or code approval?+
No. It is a material planning calculator. Verify product data, local code, structural requirements, electrical requirements, and supplier packaging before ordering or building.
