Deck seams need product layout checks

This is a board-count and seam-planning estimate. Manufacturer spacing, end gaps, picture-frame borders, breaker boards, joist blocking under seams, moisture movement, and local deck details can change the final layout.

Deck board stagger formula

Board rows = ceiling(deck width ÷ (board width + gap))

Boards per row = ceiling(deck length ÷ stock board length)

Butt joints = board rows × max(0, boards per row - 1)

Boards to buy = board rows × boards per row × (1 + waste %)

Sample takeoff

A 12 ft wide by 20 ft long deck using 5.5 in boards, 0.25 in gaps, 16 ft stock, and 10% waste needs about 58 boards, with 26 rows and 26 butt joints to stagger.

Deck Board Stagger Calculator FAQ

How do I stagger deck boards?+

Find how many stock boards are needed per row, then offset butt joints on neighboring rows so seams do not line up over the same joist bay.

Does this draw a full deck layout?+

No. It counts rows, boards, and butt joints, then reminds you of the starter offset to use in the field.

Do butt joints need blocking?+

Many layouts need solid bearing or blocking under seams. Check the decking manufacturer and local deck practice before fastening.
