Deck railing cost estimator
Deck Railing Cost Calculator
Estimate a straight deck railing run by section count, posts, balusters, rail material cost, and labor allowance. It is a quick planning total for the railing portion of a deck, not a bid.
Railing cost is not code approval
This is a rough cost and material estimator. Guard height, post attachment, openings, stair transitions, product systems, permits, labor scope, and local code can change the real railing cost.

Deck railing cost formula
Sections = ceiling(rail run ÷ max section length)
Posts = sections + 1 for a straight run
Balusters = ceiling((rail run inches - max gap) ÷ (baluster width + max gap))
Total cost = rail material + posts + balusters + labor
Sample takeoff
A 40 ft railing run with 6 ft max sections, 1.5 in balusters, 4 in max openings, 8% waste, and the default unit costs is about $2,562, with 8 posts and 94 balusters to buy.
Deck Railing Cost Calculator FAQ
How do I estimate deck railing cost?+
Count sections and posts from the rail run, estimate balusters from clear-opening rules, then add rail material, posts, balusters, and a labor allowance.
Does this include stairs or corners?+
No. It is for a straight planning run. Add stair rails, landings, corner posts, gates, returns, and special hardware separately.
Should I price railing by linear foot?+
Linear-foot pricing is useful for early planning, but product systems often price by post kits, panel kits, brackets, caps, and fasteners. Use supplier prices for the final order.
