Garage wall lumber takeoff
Garage Wall Framing Calculator
Estimate garage wall studs, top plates, bottom plates, and opening allowances from total wall run, garage door size, service openings, spacing, waste, and lumber cost.
Garage openings need header and code checks
This calculator estimates studs and plates only. Garage-door headers, bracing, portal frames, shear walls, hold-downs, fire separation, treated plates, anchors, and local code must be checked before framing.

Garage wall framing formula
Net stud run = wall run - garage door widths - other opening widths
Layout studs = ceiling(net stud run ÷ stud spacing) + 1
Opening studs = 4 per garage door or service opening for a simple allowance
Plate sticks = top plate length plus bottom plate length ÷ stock length
Sample takeoff
A 32 ft garage wall run with one 16 ft by 7 ft garage door, one service opening, 16 in spacing, 8 ft plates, and 10% waste needs about 21 studs, 10 plate sticks, and leaves about 144 ft² of framed wall area.
Garage Wall Framing Calculator FAQ
How do I estimate garage wall studs?+
Subtract garage-door and service-opening width from the total wall run, divide the remaining run by stud spacing, add an end stud, then add simple opening studs and waste.
Does this calculate garage door headers?+
No. Header size depends on span, loads, wall bracing, local code, and engineered details. This page only estimates common studs and plates.
Should bottom plates run through the garage door opening?+
Usually no for the overhead door opening. This calculator subtracts garage door width from the bottom plate length for a quick takeoff.
