Cost estimate is not a bid

This calculator gives a rough stud wall number only. Scope, layout difficulty, openings, blocking, fasteners, sheathing, drywall, waste, local wage rates, overhead, profit, taxes, and permits can change a real quote.

Stud wall cost formula

Studs = (ceiling((wall length - openings) ÷ spacing) + 1 + opening studs) × (1 + waste %)

Plates = wall length × plate rows ÷ stock length

Material = rounded studs × stud cost + rounded plates × plate cost

Total = (material + labor allowance) × (1 + markup %)

Sample takeoff

A 20 ft by 8 ft wall at 16 in spacing with one 3 ft opening, $6 studs, $8 plates, $4 per ft² labor, and 10% markup gives about $906 total, with $184 in material and $640 in labor allowance.

Stud Wall Cost Calculator FAQ

How do I estimate the cost of a stud wall?+

Count studs and plates from wall length, spacing, and openings, multiply by current material prices, add a labor allowance, then apply overhead or markup.

Does this include drywall, insulation, or electrical work?+

No. It estimates framing material and a simple framing labor allowance. Add other trades separately.

Should I use cost per square foot?+

Cost per square foot is useful for a rough labor allowance, but material quantities still depend on spacing, openings, plate rows, and waste.
