Wall framing lumber takeoff
Framing Lumber Calculator
Turn a measured wall run into studs, plates, blocking pieces, sheathing sheets, and rough material cost. Use it for a quick lumber list before supplier pricing or a more detailed wall plan.
Framing count is not structural design
This estimates common lumber quantities only. Headers, bracing, shear walls, fire blocking, anchors, treated lumber, loads, spans, local code, and engineered details must be checked before framing.

Framing lumber formula
Layout studs = ceiling((wall length - openings) ÷ spacing) + 1
Studs to buy = (layout studs + opening studs) × (1 + waste %)
Plate sticks = wall length × plate rows ÷ stock length
Sheathing sheets = wall area × (1 + waste %) ÷ sheet coverage
Sample takeoff
A 20 ft by 8 ft wall at 16 in spacing with one 3 ft opening, three plate rows, one blocking row, and 10% waste needs about 20 studs, 8 plate sticks, and 6 sheathing sheets.
Framing Lumber Calculator FAQ
How do I estimate framing lumber for a wall?+
Count studs from wall length and spacing, add opening studs, calculate plate rows from stock length, then add sheathing sheets from wall area and waste.
Does this include headers?+
No. Header size and length depend on span, load, opening type, and local code. Add header lumber from your plan or engineer separately.
When should I use the wall framing calculator instead?+
Use the wall framing calculator for a simple stud count. Use this page when you also want plates, blocking, sheets, and rough material cost in one list.
