Stair rail material takeoff
Stair Railing Calculator
Estimate a stair railing run from total rise, total run, rail extensions, post spacing, baluster width, maximum opening, waste, and material costs.
Stair railings need code and product checks
This is a material estimate only. Guard height, handrail graspability, stair geometry, baluster openings, post attachment, wall returns, landing rails, local code, and manufacturer instructions must be checked before installing.

Stair railing formula
Sloped rail length = sqrt(total rise² + total run²)
Handrail length = sloped length + rail extensions
Posts per run = ceiling(handrail length ÷ post spacing) + 1
Balusters per run = ceiling((sloped length - max opening) ÷ (baluster width + max opening))
Sample takeoff
A stair with 4 ft rise, 6 ft run, 1 ft total rail extension, 5 ft post spacing, 1.5 in balusters, and a 4 in max opening needs about 8.2 ft of handrail, 3 posts, and 18 balusters with 10% waste.
Stair Railing Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate stair railing length?+
Use the Pythagorean theorem on total rise and total run to get the sloped rail length, then add any top and bottom extensions required by the design or code.
Does this calculate code-compliant stair railing?+
No. It estimates materials after you enter assumptions. Handrail height, returns, graspable profile, guard openings, posts, and local code must be verified.
Can this estimate stair balusters too?+
Yes. It uses the sloped rail length, baluster width, maximum opening, rail runs, and waste to estimate a buy count.
