Fastener schedules need product and code checks

This is a count and layout estimator only. Structural connections, shear walls, ledgers, corrosion exposure, edge distance, embedment, nail or screw type, manufacturer tables, and local code control the final fastening schedule.

Timber fastener spacing formula

Usable run = member length - two end offsets

Fasteners per row = ceiling(usable run ÷ spacing) + 1

Total fasteners = fasteners per row × rows × matching members × (1 + waste %)

Boxes = total fasteners ÷ fasteners per box

Sample takeoff

Six 12 ft members with two fastener rows, 2 in end offsets, 12 in spacing, and 10% waste need about 172 fasteners, or one 250-count box. Actual spacing lands near 11.7 in.

Timber Fastener Spacing Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate fastener spacing along timber?+

Subtract the end offsets from the member length, divide the usable run by your chosen spacing, round up, then add one fastener at the start of the row.

Can I use this for screws and nails?+

Yes for quantity planning when you already know the approved fastener type and spacing. It does not choose the fastener or approve the schedule.

Why include rows and matching members?+

Many jobs have two rows of fasteners and repeated boards, ledgers, battens, or rails. Multiplying rows by members turns one layout into a shopping count.
