Roof framing needs span and load checks

This estimates simple gable roof framing quantities only. Rafter size, species, grade, snow and wind loads, ties, ridge beam or ridge board details, bracing, connectors, and local code must be verified before building.

Roof framing formula

Run = building span ÷ 2 + overhang

Rafter length = sqrt(run² + rise²), where rise = run × pitch ÷ 12

Rafter rows = ceiling(roof length ÷ spacing) + 1

Rafters to buy = rows × roof planes × (1 + waste %)

Sample takeoff

A 32 ft roof, 24 ft span, 1 ft overhang, 6/12 pitch, 16 in rafter spacing, and 10% waste needs about 55 rafters, 2 ridge boards, and 758.7 linear ft of roof framing.

Roof Framing Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate roof framing material?+

For a simple gable roof, calculate the common rafter length from run and pitch, count rows along the ridge by spacing, multiply by roof planes, then add waste and ridge boards.

Does this size rafters?+

No. It counts framing pieces after you choose the layout. Rafter size and spacing require span tables, loads, lumber grade, and local code.

Is this for gable roofs only?+

The default formula is for a simple gable roof with repeated common rafters. Use hip, valley, pyramid, or pergola calculators for those layouts.
