Driveway paving material estimator
Asphalt Driveway Calculator
Estimate asphalt tons, compacted volume, driveway area, waste, and rough material cost from length, width, compacted depth, and mix density. Use it with gravel and slope checks before calling suppliers.
Asphalt estimates need site and mix checks
This calculator estimates quantity only. Base prep, compaction, lift thickness, drainage, transitions, local mix density, trucking, waste, and paving crew rules can change the real order.

Asphalt driveway formula
Area = length × width
Compacted volume yd³ = area × depth in ÷ 324
Tons = compacted volume × mix density
Order tons = tons × (1 + waste %)
Sample takeoff
A 40 ft by 12 ft driveway at 3 in compacted asphalt, 2.0 tons per yd³, and 5% waste needs about 9.3 tons of asphalt.
Asphalt Driveway Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate asphalt tons for a driveway?+
Multiply driveway area by compacted depth to get volume, multiply by asphalt mix density, then add waste for trucking and placement.
What asphalt density should I use?+
A quick planning value is about 2 tons per cubic yard, or about 2.4 tonnes per cubic meter. Use the supplier value when you have it.
Does this include labor or base stone?+
No. It estimates asphalt material only. Use gravel and excavation calculators for base and sitework checks, then add local labor separately.
