Waterproofing and layout come before tile counts

This calculator estimates tile quantity only. Waterproofing, slope, backer board, movement joints, niches, patterns, trim, tile thickness, and installer layout can change the final order.

Shower tile formula

Floor area = shower length × shower width

Wall area = tiled wall length × wall height

Net area = floor area + wall area - openings

Boxes = net area × (1 + waste %) ÷ box coverage

Sample takeoff

A 3 ft by 5 ft shower with 11 ft of tiled wall length, 7 ft wall height, 10 ft² of openings, 12×24 in tile, 10 ft² boxes, and 10% waste needs about 10 boxes and 46 tiles.

Shower Tile Calculator FAQ

How do I estimate shower tile?+

Add floor area and tiled wall area, subtract openings, add waste, then divide by the box coverage printed on the tile package.

How much waste should I add for shower tile?+

Ten percent is a quick start for simple straight layouts. Raise it for niches, diagonal layouts, large format breakage, patterns, or color matching.

Does this include waterproofing or backer board?+

No. It only estimates tile boxes. Waterproofing, backer board, membrane, trim, thinset, and grout need separate product checks.
