Suspended ceiling material estimator
Ceiling Grid Calculator
Estimate drop ceiling panels, main tee sticks, cross tee pieces, perimeter wall angle, waste, and rough material cost from room length and width. Good for early supplier lists before checking the ceiling system layout.
Ceiling grid layout is product-specific
This calculator is a planning takeoff. Fire rating, seismic bracing, hanger spacing, light fixtures, HVAC, edge cuts, tile direction, and manufacturer grid rules can change the final material list.

Ceiling grid formula
Ceiling area = length × width
Panels = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ panel coverage
Main rows = ceiling(width ÷ main spacing) + 1
Cross tees = cross rows × spaces between main rows
Sample takeoff
A 24 ft by 18 ft room with 2x2 panels, 4 ft main spacing, 2 ft cross tee spacing, and 8% waste needs about 117 panels, 12 main tee sticks, and 55 cross tees.
Ceiling Grid Calculator FAQ
How many drop ceiling tiles do I need?+
Divide ceiling area by panel coverage, then add waste for border cuts and damaged tiles.
How are main tees counted?+
This quick takeoff spaces main tee rows across the room width, multiplies by room length, then rounds to stock stick lengths.
Does this design the hanger layout?+
No. Hanger wire spacing, seismic bracing, fire rating, and manufacturer rules must be checked from the ceiling system documents.
