Shiplap layouts need board and wall checks

Board face width, tongue or overlap, wall flatness, inside corners, openings, pattern layout, paint grade, and long-run joints can change the final order. Confirm the exposed face width before buying.

Shiplap formula

Net wall area = wall length × wall height - openings

Linear feet = net wall area ÷ exposed face width

Order length = linear feet × (1 + waste %)

Boards = order length ÷ stock board length

Sample takeoff

A 40 ft wall run at 8 ft high with 30 ft² of openings, 5.25 in exposed face, 12 ft boards, and 12% waste needs about 62 boards and 742 linear ft of shiplap.

Shiplap Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate shiplap boards?+

Find net wall area, divide by the exposed face width to get linear footage, add waste, then divide by stock board length.

Should I use actual board width or exposed face?+

Use exposed face width after the rabbet, tongue, groove, or overlap. The full board width usually overstates coverage.

How much waste should I use?+

A straight wall may work near 10% to 12%. Add more for many openings, short returns, pattern matching, or stain-grade boards.
