This calculator estimates board area and sheets only. Board layout, seams, fire rating, moisture board, ceiling lifts, offcuts, access, and local inspection rules can change the final order.

Drywall square footage formula

Gross wall area = total wall length × wall height

Net drywall area = gross wall area + ceiling area - openings

Order area = net area × (1 + waste %)

Sheets = order area ÷ sheet area

Sample takeoff

A room with 52 ft of wall length, 8 ft walls, 180 ft² of ceiling, 40 ft² of openings, 10% waste, and 32 ft² sheets needs about 20 sheets from 612 ft² of order area.

Drywall Square Footage Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate drywall square footage?+

Multiply total wall length by wall height, add ceiling area if needed, subtract openings, then add waste before dividing by sheet area.

Is gypsum board the same calculation as drywall?+

For a quantity takeoff, yes. Gypsum board and sheetrock are counted from net wall or ceiling area and the board size you plan to buy.

Should I count openings?+

Subtract large doors and windows for a tighter estimate, but keep enough waste for offcuts, broken corners, and room layout.
