Decorative ceiling beam layout

Decorative Ceiling Beam Layout Calculator

Lay out non-structural ceiling beams across a room, then estimate equal gaps, total linear footage, stock sticks, waste, and rough material cost. Use it for faux beams and finish carpentry takeoffs, not load-bearing beam sizing.

Decorative beam layout is not structural sizing

This calculator is for non-load-bearing faux or decorative beams only. Structural beam size, attachment, ceiling framing, fire blocking, electrical clearance, and code must be verified by the right professional before installation.

Decorative ceiling beam layout formula

Clear room width = room width - beam count × beam face width

Equal gap = clear room width ÷ (beam count + 1)

Linear beam = room length × beam count

Sticks to buy = linear beam × (1 + waste %) ÷ stock length

Sample takeoff

A 16 ft by 12 ft room with four 6 in decorative beams leaves about 24 in between beams and walls. With 10% waste and 12 ft stock, buy about 6 sticks.

Decorative Ceiling Beam Layout Calculator FAQ

How do I space decorative ceiling beams evenly?+

Subtract the total beam face width from the room width, then divide the remaining clear width by the number of gaps, which is beam count plus one.

Does this size a structural ceiling beam?+

No. It only lays out decorative or faux beams. A structural beam needs load, span, species, grade, bearing, connection, and code checks.

Should I add extra material for miters or uneven rooms?+

Yes. Increase waste for out-of-square rooms, wrapped beams, returns, scribing, stain-grade matching, or long scarf joints.
