Ridge cap layout depends on the roof system

This calculator estimates ridge and hip cap quantities only. Venting ridge, starter or end caps, laps, wind zone, profile, fastener pattern, hip/ridge intersections, and manufacturer instructions can change the final order.

Roof ridge cap formula

Measured cap length = ridge length + hip length

Order cap length = measured length × (1 + waste %)

Bundles = order cap length ÷ coverage per bundle

Pieces = order cap length ÷ cap exposure

Sample takeoff

A roof with 40 ft of ridge, 32 ft of hips, 20 ft bundle coverage, 12 in cap exposure, and 10% waste needs about four bundles and 80 cap pieces.

Roof Ridge Cap Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate roof ridge caps?+

Add ridge length and hip length, add waste for laps and cuts, then divide by the coverage per bundle or piece exposure.

Does ridge vent change the count?+

It can. Vented ridge caps, end caps, closures, and manufacturer overlap rules can change both coverage and accessory pieces.

Can I use this for metal roof ridge cap?+

Yes for a planning count if you enter metal cap coverage and exposure. Confirm laps, closures, sealant, fasteners, and trim details with the roof system.
