Deck finish material estimator
Deck Stain Calculator
Estimate deck stain or sealer gallons, cans, coated area, waste, and rough material cost from deck area, railing length, rail height, coats, and product coverage.
Deck stain coverage changes with wood and prep
Wood species, age, porosity, previous coatings, sanding, moisture, rail detail, sprayer loss, and product instructions can change coverage. This is a buying estimate, not a finish specification.

Deck stain formula
Railing area allowance = railing length × railing height × 2 faces
Coated area = (deck surface + railing allowance) × coats
Order coverage = coated area × (1 + waste %)
Stain gallons = order coverage ÷ coverage per gallon
Sample takeoff
A 320 ft² deck with 60 ft of 3 ft railing, two coats, 250 ft² per gallon, and 10% waste needs about six gallons, or six 1-gallon cans.
Deck Stain Calculator FAQ
How many gallons of deck stain do I need?+
Add deck surface area and a railing allowance, multiply by coats, add waste, then divide by the coverage on the stain label.
Should railings be counted separately?+
Yes. Rails, posts, balusters, stairs, and edges can add a lot of coated surface. This calculator uses a simple two-face railing allowance.
Does this work for deck sealer too?+
Yes, if you enter the coverage rate and coat count from the sealer label.
