Roof fastener box estimator
Roofing Nails Calculator
Estimate roofing nails and boxes from roof area, nail rate, waste, box count, and box cost. It fills the roof accessory gap between shingles, underlayment, ridge caps, drip edge, and step flashing.
Fastener schedules are product and code specific
This calculator estimates nail quantities only. Shingle type, high-wind nailing, deck thickness, nail length, corrosion rating, starter strips, hip/ridge caps, and local code can change the required fasteners.

Roofing nail formula
Roof squares = roof area ÷ 100
Nails = roof squares × nails per square × (1 + waste %)
Boxes = nails ÷ nails per box
Sample takeoff
A 2,000 ft² roof at 320 nails per square, 10% waste, and 1,000 nails per box needs about 7,040 nails, or eight boxes.
Roofing Nails Calculator FAQ
How many roofing nails do I need?+
Convert roof area into roof squares, multiply by the nail rate per square, add waste, then round boxes up.
What nail rate should I use?+
Common asphalt shingles often use four nails per shingle, but high-wind zones or product instructions may require six or another schedule.
Does this include ridge cap nails?+
Use the waste allowance for small extras, or add a separate allowance for ridge caps, starters, repairs, and missed shots.
