Floor underlayment roll estimator
Floor Underlayment Calculator
Estimate flooring underlayment rolls, order area, seam tape, overlap waste, and rough material cost from room area and roll coverage. Use it after flooring boxes and before trim or transitions.
Underlayment depends on flooring and subfloor
This calculator estimates rolls and tape only. Flooring type, moisture rating, sound rating, radiant heat, vapor retarder needs, adhesive rules, subfloor flatness, and manufacturer instructions decide the real product and layout.

Floor underlayment formula
Net floor area = floor area - deductions
Order area = net area x (1 + overlap % + waste %)
Underlayment rolls = order area / roll coverage
Tape rolls = rounded rolls x tape allowance / tape roll length
Sample takeoff
A 240 ft² plank floor with 5% overlap, 10% waste, 100 ft² rolls, and 20 ft tape allowance per roll needs about 3 rolls and 2 tape rolls.
Floor Underlayment Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate floor underlayment rolls?+
Start with net floor area, add overlap and waste, then divide by the roll coverage printed on the product label.
Should I include seam tape?+
Include tape if the underlayment product requires taped seams, moisture control, or sound-control continuity.
Is underlayment always required?+
No. It depends on flooring type, subfloor, moisture, sound rating, and product instructions.
