Board and batten formula

Spacing length = batten spacing ÷ 12

Batten count = ceiling(wall length ÷ spacing length) + 1

Batten lineal = batten count × wall height

Sticks to buy = batten lineal × (1 + waste %) ÷ stock length

Panel area = wall length × wall height - openings

Sample takeoff

A 16 ft wide by 8 ft high accent wall with 16 in batten spacing, 8 ft stock, and 10% waste needs 13 battens and 15 sticks. Panel area is 128 ft² before paint.

Board and Batten Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate board and batten spacing?+

Choose a target spacing, divide the wall length by that spacing, round up, then add one batten so both ends of the run are covered.

Does this size exterior siding attachment?+

No. It only estimates decorative battens and panel area. Exterior siding, rain screen, fasteners, and weather barriers need product and code guidance.

Should I include doors and windows?+

Subtract large openings from the panel area. For battens, add or subtract pieces manually if the layout changes around openings.
