Tile cost formula

Order area = tile area × (1 + waste %)

Tile boxes = order area ÷ box coverage, rounded up

Thinset bags = order area ÷ thinset coverage, rounded up

Grout bags = order area ÷ grout coverage, rounded up

Total = (materials + tile area × labor rate) × (1 + markup %)

Sample takeoff

A 120 ft² tile job with 10% waste, 15 ft² boxes at US$42, thinset at 75 ft²/bag, grout at 250 ft²/bag, US$6/ft² labor, and 10% markup is about US$1,294.

Tile Cost Calculator FAQ

How do I estimate tile installation cost?+

Estimate tile boxes, thinset, grout, and labor from the tile area, then add waste and markup.

Does this include shower waterproofing?+

No. Add membrane, backer board, shower pan, niche, curb, trim, or waterproofing allowances separately when the job needs them.

Can I use this for backsplash tile?+

Yes for a quick planning number, but backsplash trim, outlets, small cuts, and decorative patterns may need higher labor and waste assumptions.
